There’s an 80's scirocco in my area for about $4300, I was thinking of taking a loot at it. I really like the older hot hatches.

They’re awesome, I like Sciroccos a lot too. My friend had one that died brutally, the gearbox seized up and he sideswiped a pole

If I recall correctly, this was built in the Pennsylvania VW factory. It’s not as well built as the German ones. I can’t see paying more than a grand for it ... preferably a lot less.

Oh, that’s not ideal....I wouldn’t want to pay more for it either, but thank’s for the tip, I forgot the GTi’s weren’t all made in Germany

VW had planned for the Rabbit to dominate the US, and I think all of them were built in PA. I believe the last year for the German-built cars was 1979. But Oppo might prove me wrong.

Oh damn, well if I got it, it would just be to screw around with, see if I could get it in half-decent shape. I’ve never come across a well-built one, so it at least wouldn’t be surprisingly poor quality

I think this is a disaster waiting to happen. And old Sciroccos are all German (I think) but it’s also a 35 year old German car. You can’t be sure.

It probably is, but I have had experience with this age of Rabbit and Cabrio before. Did a head rebuild on one in high school. It’s the rust I’m worried about most, the engine and electrics I know my way around well enough to know if it’s gonna murder my wallet. Well, how much it’s gonna murder my wallet.... I probably won’t get it anyways, I need the parking space my Blazer is in, and I don’t have it ready for sale even.

Old GTIs are worth a lot here in Germany. But like Steve has pointed out, it’s a Pennsylvanian built car and a ugly US spec version. If the Rabbit hasn’t been completely eaten by the rust it’s a np at $800.

That's my thinking too. I would love quad rounds and good build quality, but that's not really possibly in North America. A beater is the best I can hope for, find some bike carbs, strip the probably ruined interior and have some fun

For $800 it’s still worth checking it out. 112hp does not sound like much but the Rabbit is really light. VR6 swap sounds tempting though..

They are super light, that little power is more fun than you’d think. I don’t have anywhere around to go actually fast, so I’ve been looking for a good little manual car for some “slow car fast” fun. I also have a friend swapping a VR6 into a VW Caddy, so if I drive that it might change my mind...
